If at least two cells you are trying to join contain data, the standard Excel Merge Cells feature will only keep the upper-left cell value and discard values in other cells.īut is there a way to merge cells in Excel without losing data? Of course there is. Whatever the reason, combining cells in Excel is not as straightforward as it may seem. In other cases, there may be too much content to be displayed in one cell, and you decide to merge it with adjacent blank cells.
For example, you may want to combine several cells for a better data presentation or structure. In your Excel worksheets, you may often need to merge two or more cells into one large cell. But, only the values of the left single cell gets left, and the others aren’t.The tutorial demonstrates different techniques to quickly merge two cells in Excel and combine multiple cells row by row or column by column without losing data in Excel 365, Excel 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010 and lower. It means all the cells participated in the merging process, retain their positions. Lastly, the Unmerge Cell button splits the newly formed large cell single cell to multiple cells.
And, similarly the first left cell’s values’re remained, after the merging process at last, out of the other ones. Also, like the Merge Center, this button does not center the contents too, after the merging of the cells. Thirdly, the Merge Cells button helps to merge the selected cells into one individual cell. So, if multiple cells have values, the first left cell’s value remains, while the others’re deleted due to the merge. But, unlike the Merge Center, the Merge Across doesn’t centers the content after merging. And, the cell becomes large as well due to joining of the cells. Secondly, the Merge Across button merges the selected cells in the same row.

Firstly, the Merge Center button helps to join cells together by making it as a single cell. These are the Merge Across, the Merge Cells and the Unmerge Cells. So, the Merge Center button has four buttons including itself. They’re the Align, the Wrap Text, the Indent buttons etc. In total, the Alignment group has Eleven buttons. Some of they’re Angle Counterclockwise and the Angle Clockwise buttons etc and so on. In the previous, all the Orientation buttons were part of the discussion.
